The International Ethnographic Film Festival of Quebec

Dedicated to the promotion of ethnographic films, the FIFEQ screens films created by new filmmakers from both Canada and abroad as well as from renowned figures in the discipline of visual anthropology and the social documentary genre. The festival is both a celebration of the discipline of visual anthropology, as well as a reflection on the debates and ethical issues surrounding the utility and relevance of employing visual media when studying cultures and societies.

This is all been made possible due to the efforts of anthropology students from Concordia University, Université de Montréal, McGill University and Université Laval. The FIFEQ creates a forum for professors, professionals, students and others passionate about films and anthropology to watch contemporary ethnographic films on the big screen and in turn to exchange ideas, pose questions and learn more about film media within the domain of the social sciences.

- HISTORY AND MISSION OF THE FIFEQ

The FIFEQ was founded in 2003, following an encounter between students at a conference on visual anthropology, among which these young passionates individuals decided to put together an annual event to celebrate ethnographic film, the Montreal Ethnographic Film Festival, which in 2007 was renamed International Ethnographic Film Festival of Quebec. Since the first edition held in 2004, the FIFEQ has kept its mission to showcase ethnographic film and visual anthropology while making it accessible, free and widespread across the general public.

- WHAT IS ETHNOGRAPHIC FILM?

Ethnographic film is a type of documentary film which focuses on accurately interpreting the language, actions, traditions, events and rituals of different peoples, groups, and communities. This dynamic trend in visual anthropology uses images as a tool to study cultures and societies.

- THE FIFEQ’S 10th EDITION

Unlike the previous editions, the 2013 FIFEQ will be held in the wake of spring rather than in the cold of January. This year, we have worked with captivating filmmakers to gather engaging films from all over the world and develop enriching discussions and subjects that will make the FIFEQ 10th edition absolutely memorable.

Thought-provoking films, interesting encounters and lively conversations are on the menu!
