Like Hearing Through Sheet Metal is a lyrical and intimate documentary that follows three individuals—Martin “Lion” Lapointe, Marianne Desroches, and M.—as they navigate an often conflicted relationship with a powerful chemical addiction. Shot in both digital 4K and 16mm, the film interlaces the events and rhythms of every day life with raw, unguarded reflections on long-term substance use. Rejecting sensationalism, Like Hearing…offers a holistic portrait of vulnerability, capturing not just struggle but the full depth of a life beyond addiction.

Marie Jauffret-Roustide is a sociologist and political scientist, in charge of research at Inserm in Paris, France. She coordinates an international research program on harm reduction policies in France, Europe and North America, with a focus on the history of substance users’ participation in policies aimed at them, gender and ethno-racial social inequalities, and participatory research approaches. She coordinated the evaluation of low-risk consumption rooms in Paris. She is a member of the Scientific Advisory Board of the European Monitoring Center on Drugs and Drug Addiction. She is currently Scientific Director of the D3S Social Sciences, Drugs and Societies program at the Ecole des Hautes Etudes en Sciences Sociales. She has been collaborating on several research projects (Gender-Arp, Samuel de Champlain, D3S program, FOCUS) with Karine Bertrand since 2019.
Since completing her studies in Sociology, Mariane Béliveau has been invested in documentary production, in order to express her desire for radical, socio-political, transformation through a sensory approach. The co-production Narratives from Saint Gabriel (2017) and the production entitled I usually sing it in the shower (2018) mark the start of her independent practice. Whether as a social worker or a cinematographer, her projects aim to question the power relationships that marginalise particular groups (sex workers, drug users, migrants, and more).
