Queen of Lapa

Queen of Lapa

by Carolina Monnerat & Theodore Collatos, 2019 (in Brazil)

Brazil | 73 min | English subtitles

Larger-than-life actress, cabaret performer, activist, and proud sex professional since the age of eleven, Luana Muniz – arguably one of Brazil’s most famous transgender personalities – shaped a new reality in her hostel by providing a safe working environment for generations of young transgendered women in the neighborhood of Lapa, in Rio de Janeiro. Queen of Lapa explores these women’s day-to-day lives, their quests for love, the Brazilian political climate, and some housemate rivalries, all under matriarch Muniz’s watchful and guiding eye.

FIFEQ’s review

A beautiful, intimate and touching film presenting a sensible topic and truths about the political and social context of contemporary Brazil. Finding their codes in the genre of cinéma-vérité, the directors captured the reality of the protagonists by intruding, with respect and humility, in their privacy. These women share their fears, anxieties, and a daily struggle to exist, and tell us about the physical and psychological violence they face on a daily basis.
