At the Corvette and the Nouveau Canada Hot-Dog, two Montreal diners, the cups of filter coffee never stay empty for long. French toast, eggs and bacon, comfortable silences and snatches of conversation. Jean-Baptiste Mees sketches in 16mm a film of fragments, following the regulars of these old-school spots where everyone has something to share — a handful of words or a slice of cake.
Beneath the surface, La journée qui s’en vient est flambant neuve traces the disappearance of these accessible spaces that strengthen social bonds in the simplest of ways, breaking, at least a little, the solitude.
A fragile community taking shape between the tables, while the chaos of the outside world seeps in through the windows. Filmed with tenderness and a deep love for its characters, the film preserves something of a world that is fading away.
